Education and Training Programs

Important Training Information.

Code of practice.

Refunds:
A refund of 80% will be made if a candidate for training withdraws from the course prior to the closing date. If withdrawal occurs after the closing date there will be no refund given except in extreme medical circumstances (doctor’s certification required)

Participation in VET:
Information about current legislative and regulatory requirements impacting on participants in training can be found as follows:

  • Tasmanian VET Act: provides for the administration of a vocational education and training system and oversees the provision of post-Year 10 education and training in Tasmania.
  • Tasmanian Occupational Health and Safety Act: provides for duties and obligations related to workplace health and safety.
  • Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Act: provides for prohibition of discrimination and other specified conduct and provides for the investigation into complaints in relation to discrimination. This act also covers legislation against workplace harassment, bullying or victimisation (points 17 and 18)

“Smoother Mover”™ warm water activities leader training

This training is available to movement health professionals, activity personnel or community peer leaders who are interested in leading this program in warm water pools in their area. Training consists of 2 ½ days tuition which involves both a theoretical and practical component.

Training content includes:

  • Understanding arthritis and its management
  • Benefits and precautions in relation to exercise
  • The use of water as a medium for exercise
  • Planning and implementing a safe and effective water based activity class
  • Basic skills in leading and exercise activity in water and overcoming potential barriers to participation in the program

This course includes study of nationally accredited unit of competency SRFCFP001A Deliver an approved community fitness program to promote wellbeing. This is a unit of competency from the SRF04 Fitness Industry package. Successful participants in this training will be eligible for a statement of attainment in the above competency which will be recognised by other training organisations.

“Fitter Sitters”™ chair based activities leader training

This training program has been designed specifically for people who are interested in leading this exercise activity in their community. The program aims to provide an opportunity for involvement for people with limited exercise opportunities. Training consists of both a theoretical and practical component.

Training content includes:

  • Understanding arthritis and its management
  • Benefits and precautions in relation to exercise
  • Planning and implementing a safe and effective chair based activity class
  • Basic skills in leading and exercise activity and overcoming potential barriers to participation in the program

This course includes study of nationally accredited unit of competency SRFCFP001A Deliver an approved community fitness program to promote wellbeing. This is a unit of competency from the SRF04 Fitness Industry package. Successful participants in this training will be eligible for a statement of attainment in the above competency which will be recognised by other training organisations.

Tai Chi for Arthritis leader training

Tai Chi for Arthritis Part 1

This program, designed by Dr Paul Lam and a team of health and movements experts, is especially gentle for people with limitations caused by arthritis. It is also beneficial for people wanting to improve joint mobility and balance. Training is suitable for movement health professionals, experienced Tai Chi practitioners (in other forms) or those with an interest in bringing Tai Chi for Arthritis into their local community. The 2 day leader training workshop includes:

  • Understanding arthritis and its management
  • Exercise benefits and precautions in relation to Tai Chi for Arthritis
  • Performance of the 12 Tai Chi for Arthritis movements
  • Teaching Tai Chi for Arthritis.

Tai chi for Arthritis Part 2

Leader training for the continuation Part 2 program of Tai Chi for Arthritis. This 1 day training is available to anyone who has successfully completed the training in Part 1 and has run at least two community part 1 programs. Training covers the reverse part 1 movements and 9 new movements to complete the 31 movement program.

Strength Training for People with Long Term Health Conditions

This course targets physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, and human movement graduates who are working with clients with chronic illnesses. This 1day intensive workshop aims to provide participants with the skills to design and initiate appropriate strength training programs for people with chronic illnesses specifically: Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Diabetes and Heart Disease.

Content covered in this course includes:

  • Overview of research relating to strength training and chronic illnesses
  • Relevant assessment procedures for strength training and chronic illnesses
  • Contraindications and precautions to strength training
  • Designing strength training programs for people with chronic illnesses
  • Strength training related injuries and risk factors
  • Strength training exercise terminology (improving communication between the health and fitness industries)
  • Case studies and suggested assessment forms
